An Improved Method for the Preparation OF 3,5-Difluorosalicylaldehyde and 3,5-Difluorosalicylic Acid #

An improved method for the synthesis of 3,5-difluorosalicylic acid (3b) and 3,5-difluorosalicylaldehyde (3a) is described. 2,4-Difluorophenol (4) undergoes a formylation reaction to afford aldehyde 3a which is oxidized to the desired acid 3b. This method avoids the use of the highly corrosive HF and fluorine gas and requires no special laboratory apparatus.

     

X-ray diffraction study of the smectic mesophase of some azobenzene-containing polyacrylates

Abstract

An X-ray study is performed on powder specimens and on stretched oriented fibres of two liquid crystalline polyacrylates containing the azobenzene mesogenic unit with either a 4′-n-pentyloxy (sample 1–4) or 4′-n-hexyloxy (sample 1–5) substituent. The X-ray diffraction patterns of both samples showed the presence of a bilayer smectic C mesophase with the mesogneic groups tilted by an angle β ～ 45° (1–4) or β ～ 38° (1–5) with respect to the layer normal. The electron density profile p(z) along the direction normal to the smectic layers was calculated by Fourier inversion and possible structural models of the smectic mesophase are discussed. A partial interdigitation of the terminal alkyloxy substituents appears to occur.     

A Convenient Synthesis of N-Alkyl and N,N-Dialkyltrifluoroacetamides in a Solid-liquid Two-Phase System in the Presence of Phase-Transfer Catalysts

Trifluoroacetamide is easily monoalkylated in a K₂ CO₃-organic solvent solid-liquid two-phase system affording in good to excellent yields N-alkyltrifluoroacetamides. Under the same conditions, the latter, in turn, react with alkylating agents giving N, N-dialkyltrifluoroacetamides in high yields.     

Characterization of bronze Roman coins of the fifth century called <Emphasis Type="Italic">nummi</Emphasis> through different analytical techniques

Mixing of different organic charge-transfer-complexes (CT-complexes) might allow the adjustment of the optical and morphological properties of the resulting material system. In this work, a study of two CT-complexes, mixed by thermal coevaporation at different concentrations by substituting only the acceptor molecules, is presented. Electron diffraction patterns, which were collected on samples of the ternary system of the prototypical CT-complexes DBTTF-TCNQ and DBTTF-F₄TCNQ do not show any indication of a mixed crystalline phase or novel crystalline order. X-ray diffraction measurements additionally confirm the phase separation in the ternary system. However, upon mixing of the complexes, the degree of crystallinity of the individual phases is reduced. This effect correlates with the mixing ratio of the CT-complexes in the ternary compound. Furthermore, we do not observe a shift or the appearance of new peaks in the infrared spectra of (DBTTF-TCNQ) _x :(DBTTF-F₄TCNQ)_1?x . Hence, there is no indication for a pronounced or novel chemical interaction between the individual CT-complexes in the mixed compound.     

Complete self-shrinkers confined into some regions of the space

We study geometric properties of complete non-compact bounded self-shrinkers and obtain natural restrictions that force these hypersurfaces to be compact. Furthermore, we observe that, to a certain extent, complete self-shrinkers intersect transversally a hyperplane through the origin. When such an intersection is compact, we deduce spectral information on the natural drifted Laplacian associated to the self-shrinker. These results go in the direction of verifying the validity of a conjecture by H.D. Cao concerning the polynomial volume growth of complete self-shrinkers. A finite strong maximum principle in case the self-shrinker is confined into a cylindrical product is also presented.
